Our Future Selves: An Interactive Feature

August 2, 2011

The Washington Post in partnership with News21 published a written piece and an interactive feature to answer the questions of: How will the country's demographics change over the next 40 years? How does our sex, race and ethnicity affect our health, now and later? What does the financial picture look like for retirees? This interactive allows users to enter their information and get answers, using the best projections from economists, biostatisticians and demographers.

Dependency Ratios: Future Effect on Economy and Society

March 31, 2010

This interactive examines dependency ratios—the measure of a country's working age population to its over 65 population—across six different world regions going through demographic changes from 1950 through projections into 2050. The higher the ratio, the older the society and the more that society spends on programs such as pensions with fewer younger people paying into the system. Immigration, pensions, health care, national debt and the presence of older workers are just some of the corollary stories that emerge.

Dec, 15, 2010

Featured by the Poynter Institute's Ellyn Angelotti in her 2011 presentation "Top Tools and Excellence in Digital Storytelling," this map shows crowd-sourced and reported demographic information on how long people have lived in different areas Brooklyn and how long they plan to stay as a way to demonstrate the changing face of the borough.

I'm moving this over to my domain so the link is down temporarily.

Brooklyn Election Report

Nov, 2, 2010

Brooklyn’s income and spending by the numbers
Brooklyn’s 2.5 million residents are spending more now, but getting less for their money. Transportation costs are high, weekly wages are low, and nearly 1 million people are on some form of government assistance compared to about 592,000 people in 2000. Even seemingly bright spots, like a steady rise in personal income from 2000 to 2008, need to be celebrated with a caveat — as of last year, personal income stopped increasing.
